Great Lakes Shipwreck Diving
With nearly 3,300 miles of coastline and a shore that touches four of the five Great Lakes, Michigan is home to world-class diving. Sure, it may not offer the colorful coral reefs of the tropics. But if you are interested in shipwrecks, Michigan offers them in spades! It is estimated that there are over 6,000 shipwrecks in the Great Lakes, including the most famous of them all – the elusive and fabled Le Griffon, LeSalle’s ship that went down in 1679 somewhere in northern Lake Michigan. While no one has yet discovered the remains of the Le Griffon, you can join the Huron Scuba Dive Team on our monthly charter dives out of Port Sanilac as we explore the cargo freighters, tugboats, and schooners of nearby Lake Huron.
While a few of the wrecks we visit sit in shallower water, many of them rest in the 80’-100’ range. Open Water Divers are welcome to join us, as we’ll choose the wrecks we dive based on the certification level, experience, and comfort of the group. But for maximum safety – and to dive on the better wrecks – we recommend holding an Advanced Open Water (AOW) certification. Not an AOW diver? Not a problem! Stop by or call Huron Scuba and we can get you enrolled in one of our upcoming Advanced Open Water courses. From there, you can go on to earn a Deep Diver certification, where you’ll gain the skills and confidence to dive up to 130’. Or complete a Wreck Diver specialty certification where you’ll learn how to survey a wreck, use lines and reels, and to avoid the dangers that come with diving on wrecks. And, while some divers do these trips in a wetsuit, why not stay warm and dry while you’re exploring the wrecks? Stop by or call the shop and we can enroll you in a Dry Suit Diver course, where you’ll learn the special skills required to dive safely in a drysuit.
